Evan Preyer: A Youthful and Experienced PCYC Volunteer

Evan Preyer is one of the youngest volunteers in PCYC’s After School Enrichment Program. She is also one of the program’s more experienced volunteers.

At age 13, Evan volunteers each week to help a Fourth Grade student with her homework.  She also helps the staff with a variety of other activities in the After School classrooms.

Evan draws upon her experience as a former student in PCYC’s After School Enrichment program.

When Evan attended 5th grade at nearby Jordan Park School two years ago she was also in PCYC’s After School program with six of her other siblings.

She finished elementary last spring and started attending junior high at Inter District Downtown School.  She thought she would no longer be attending After School Enrichment because she was older.

Her mother had other ideas, however.

“My mother told me that she wanted me to go back to PCYC again,” Evan said. “She wanted me to be a volunteer in the program” where her brothers and sisters still attend.

“At first I didn’t want to do it,” she said.  “Now that I am here and helping the kids I like it.  It’s nice.  The kids look up to me.  I know what it was like for me when I was here as a 5th grader.”

Her favorite subjects in school are math and science. Those interests are useful not only for tutoring, but also for her career plans to become a doctor.

Thanks to Evan, and to all of our PCYC volunteers.  Your work truly makes a difference in the lives of kids.
