Launch Year-Round Arts
Programming at the Capri
Theater
With
only hours to spare on Monday, June 18, the installation of
“new” used seats in the Capri Theater were in place for a
sold-out “Classic Capri: A Tribute to Nat King Cole, Billie
Holiday and Sarah Vaughn” jazz concert featuring singers
Dennis Spears
, Debbie Duncan, Charmin Michelle, and the Wolverines Jazz Trio.
Donated
to PCYC by the Minneapolis-based ArtSpace Projects, Inc., the new
seats are among several enhancements made to the
Capri
for expanded programming as work begins on a major capital campaign
to renovate the theater and expand programming as part of the Capri
Theater Renaissance. While
architectural and fundraising planning is underway, more year-round
programming is in the works.

“The
Classic Capri program is just the beginning of an exciting line-up
of events we will announce later this summer for the Capri
Theater,” said
Karl Reichert
, Director of Capri Theater Development.
Reichert, along with Artistic Associates
Dennis Spears
and
Kevin West
, joined the PCYC staff earlier this year as part of the Capri
Theater Renaissance.
The
first event they created for the Capri was an informal Jazz &
Blues Jam session held April 21, and it represented a show of
support for PCYC by musicians from across the Twin Cities who
volunteered their time and talent for the 2 ˝ hour program.
The featured musicians included David Anderson, Steve Austen,
Bobby Diop, Janet Diop, Duane Jones, Jeffery Keys, Mary Mabry, Carl
Moses, Keith Nance, Onayemi Ogunkoye, Ginger Patterson, Thor
Paulson, Larry Roddy, Quincy Smith, Martin Stovall, Joel Sundseth,
Peter Susage, Jomo Tar-v, JoJo Tyner, Tim Wangen, and Bob Wiegano.
Additional
earlier summer performances included a July 7 classic Blues
performance by artist Jomo Tar-V & Reflections of Time.
Other performers included Ginger Patterson, Jimi “Prime
Time” Smith, Janet Diop, Joc Davis, Carlos de Jesus, Fredrico
Lawler, Bobby McDuffie and poet Vernon Patterson.
